Riven Guide Part 6

Ghen's 233rd Age

After activating the power and using your first linking book, the next section starts with you awkwardly in a cage which limits your movements for a while. Turn to the left twice to see Ghen's own personal crest- five pen nibs, the D'ni number 5 and symbols representing the five open books. Push the button in the middle of the device to actually recieve a visit from Ghen himself!

Meeting Ghen

This is a strange meeting. Ghen has you trapped and wants to convince you that he is a nice guy. Taking the prison book from you to check your honesty he then gives a long speech about how he has changed and become a much kinder bloke. Now he asks you to link to D'ni first, presumably to make sure you are not trying to send him off into a trap.

Choice 1: Wait

If you wait for a while before accepting his offer, Ghen will close the linking book, activate the furnace and ask you to reconsider while he disappears to do his gardening. Now the furnace is working, the five linking books are now ready to be used, allowing you to visit any one of them you choose. The shape of each island on the cover of each book- and if you have been paying attention, you'll know that there is one Island that that you have not yet visited. Open the fifth book ( the one with the lone square on the front) and link off to explore the new Island. But it would be better to hold on as there is a code you need in Ghen's house first.

Choice 2: Link

If you immediatly accept Ghen's offer to link, he will now be trapped and you are free to explore the rest of the area outside the cage. If you remember reading Atrus' journal, he wrote that the prison book is only able to hold one man - if a second person uses the book, the first is released. So go ahead and access the prison book. Ghen will follow, releasing you from the prison and trapping himself. You are now free to explore the room, but this time the furnace needs to be activated by yourself. Once its powered up you're free to go any where you like in the world of Riven, thanks to the traveller friendly linking books.

Ghen's House

Over on the writing table is a copy of the latest book Ghen is working on, along with his pens and a special ink. There is a door leading to the outside world but that cannot be opened. Take the ladder that leads to the lower floor - this is Ghen's bedroom. His personal journal is in here, along with an important sphere that plays five different tones each time its activated. Concentrate on memorising the order of the tones you here ( this sequence is different each time you play the game- think of the tones as a series of ~ and ^.) Now that you have all the information head back upstairs and access the book with the small square on the cover.

Finding Catherine

As you turn around outside the fifth dome, you see the remains of a massive tree. If you have already read Ghen's personal Diary you should know that this is the prison Island - an area which was once part of Riven. The tree stump has a kind of rusty dome built into it. Head forward up to the stump and look around for the lift at its core. Pull the triangle on the right to move up to the cave on the next floor. Ignore the switches - we'll come back to those in a moment. Now you should finally get to meet Catherine. Remember one of the unexplained views from the back of the throne room on Survey Island? That was actually showing Catherines room here - pervy Ghen has been keeping a close watch on her...

Freedom

Now Catherine should give you some important information here - the way to release her from the prison she's currently locked in. The device against the back of the wall of the lift is the lock for the cage, so here you need to use the little pedals to duplicate the five tones that the device in Ghen's room made. Do this correctly and flip the lever to free Catherine! You now rise up to meet her, where she tells you to return to the telescope ( way back at the start of the game), to free her chum, Atrus.
